Kentucky Medicaid: six-month renewals for some adults start January 1, 2027
From January 1, 2027, adults 19 to 64 on Kentucky Medicaid based only on income renew every six months. Children still renew once a year.
Starting January 1, 2027, some adults on Kentucky Medicaid will renew every six months instead of once a year. This is for adults ages 19 to 64 who qualify based only on income. In many waiver families, that is a parent's own coverage, not the child's.
What's changing
The Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange (KHBE) now explains these federal changes on its member pages. The page says:
"Starting January 1, 2027, some Medicaid members will have a Medicaid renewal every six months instead of once per year."
That is from KHBE's page, Changes Coming to Medicaid and Marketplace Coverage.
Here is what that means:
- Who renews every six months: adults ages 19 to 64 who qualify for Medicaid based only on income. This group is called Medicaid Expansion.
- If you were enrolled before January 1, 2027: you keep your current 2027 renewal month. After that, you move to six-month renewals.
- Everyone else, including children, keeps renewing once a year.
The same page says backdated coverage gets shorter for applications in 2027. Backdated coverage means Medicaid can pay for care you got before you applied.
- Adults who qualify based only on income: up to one month before they applied.
- Other applicants: up to two months before they applied.
A later change is also listed. Starting October 1, 2028, some income-based adults will have cost sharing, which means paying part of the cost of their care.
Who it affects (and who it doesn't)
This affects adults ages 19 to 64 on Kentucky Medicaid based only on income. In waiver households, that is often the parents' own coverage.
It does not change renewals for children. It does not change renewals for members who qualify through a disability-linked or other non-expansion category. They keep renewing once a year.
Key dates
- January 1, 2027: Six-month renewals begin for income-based adults. Shorter backdated coverage applies to applications in 2027.
- October 1, 2028: Cost sharing starts for some income-based adults.
What you can do
- Find out how each person in your home qualifies for Medicaid. A child and a parent can be in different groups. If you are not sure, ask your case manager or the office that handles your Medicaid.
- Put your 2027 renewal month on your calendar. After that renewal, plan for one every six months.
- Open every letter about your Medicaid renewal right away, and keep a copy.
- Backdated coverage is shorter for applications in 2027. If an adult in your home needs coverage, do not wait to apply.
